Tips for travelling round Tuscany
Tourist offices
Information offices are marked as APT or Pro loco and are great for free maps, opening hours, lists of events and hotel directories.
Opening hours
Shops open at 8 or 9am. They close for lunch and open again at around 3.30 till 8pm.
Some shops in bigger cities are starting to favour a straight through opening time.
Trains
Generally (in)efficient. www.trenitalia.com.
Get to ticket office in time as queue's can be long. There are also automatic ticket machines. Before you get on the train the ticket must be stamped in the automatic yellow box on the platform.
Car rental
Best way to really explore Tuscany. Local companies are generally cheaper than International ones.
Road rules
Speed limits:
In town, 30-50kmph
On 2-lane roads, 50-70kmph
On motorways, 130kmph
Tolls
All motorways are toll roads. Get a ticket on entry and pay on exit.
Buses
You should buy the ticket beforehand at the tobacconists or bars. If you have to buy it on the bus, you pay extra and they don't give change! Stamp the ticket in the automatic machine on bus.
Taxis
Ranks at airports and stations.
Rates go up generally after 8pm. About 10% tip is expected.
Health
Eu visitors need a European health insurance card. Tourists from elsewhere must get medical insurance. Most treatments must be paid for up front and then apply for reimbursement once home.
The hospitals are mainly efficient. The emergency is called Pronto soccorso.
Chemists are well equipped and will give help for minor ailments. In most towns there is a 24 hour pharmacy.
